ORTHOPAEDICS

The two units of the department consists of orthopaedic surgeons with experience in subspecialties like orthopaedic oncology, spine, paediatric orthopaedics, hand surgery, arthroscopy and arthroplasty. This hospital is a major referral centre for orthopaedics.

OP Timing

All working days - 8 AM to 4 PM.

Facilities

Trauma

24 hrs. casualty service and comprehensive poly trauma care are imparted by specialists from Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Anaesthesia.Interlocking nailing for femur, tibia, humerus, using appropriate system like Sirus, AO, GK, PFN, Gamma, dynamic compression plating of various bones, DHS fixation for femoral neck fractures, hemiarthroplasty using AM prosthesis, Thomson prosthesis or Bipolar prosthesis (cemented or uncemented), mini fragment (2.5 and 1.5) system for fixation of small bones of hand and feet, Jess fixature system – fixation, management with Ilizaravo ring fixature, spinal and pelvic fracture fixation,management of compound fractures with external fixation system, closed reduction of fractures and dislocation are procedures conducted.

Paediatric orthopaedics:

Conservative correction by serial plastering for deformities like club-foot, club-hand, surgical correction of congenital deformities, limb lengthening,

conservative and surgical correction of congenital dislocation of hip, knee and management of cerebral palsy and post polio paralysis are undertaken.

Orthopaedic oncology:

Management of all benign and malignant tumours of bone and soft tissue is routinely done. Limb salvage surgery is undertaken with the full support

from medical oncology department and radiotherapy departments especially for tumours like osteosarcoma, arthroscopy of knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow and wrist, arthroscopic ligament (ACL, PCL) reconstruction, meniscal repair, shoulder rotator cuff repair, Bankarts repair and SLAP repairs and endoscopic carpal tunnel release & plantar fasciotomy are also undertaken.

Joint reconstruction:

Total hip replacement, total knee replacement and shoulder & elbow replacement are facilities available.

Spine Surgery:

Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS), microscopic spine surgery for Disc prolapse and lumbar canal stenosis, balloon kyphoplasty for osteoporotic spine fracture and selected spinal tumours and thoracoscopic spine surgery for scoliosis, fractures and tumours of spine are available.

Hand Surgery:

In conjuction with plastic surgery department, we can provide skin cover for de gloving injuries, reconstruction for tendon injuries, tendon grafts and tendon transfers. Primary and secondary nerve repairs are done routinely. A full-fledged upgraded physiotherapy department will take care of the rehabilitation of patients when required.

Dr. Dominic K Puthoor

Specialty interests: Orthopaedic Oncology

After graduating from Calicut University with a first rank in Chemistry, he did his MBBS and postgraduate diploma in orthopaedics from Govt Medical College, Calicut. After completing Post Graduate degree in Orthopaedics from Govt Medical College, Trivandrum, he joined Amala Institute in 1988. He has undergone training in Orthopaedic Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital and in Ilizarov techniques at Appolo Hospital, Chennai. He has also undergone various other trainings of which notable are AO Basic course, Deformity course and Indo-German foot and leg course. His research interests relate to bone tumors on which he has several publications in various journals. He has contributed book chapters, including one in "Text book of Orthopaedics and Trauma" by Kulkarni in 2008.

He is currently the Vice-President of Kerala Orthopaedic Association and its elected President. He was the president of Trichur Orthopaedic society from 2010 to 2013. He has organized several CMEs in various capacities and has presented many papers in regional and national orthopaedic conferences as afaculty. Dr Dominic is the recipient of several awards, which include Prof P K Surendran Memorial gold medal, 1995 and Dr Varghese Mathai travelling fellowship of KOA, 1994-95
