  Overview:  
The department undertakes Academic activities as well as diagnostic laboratory work.
 
 
  Diagnostic Laboratory Work  

It offers services to the needs of the patients who are attending the Hospital. The services offered by the department are:Bacteriology,

Immunology (mainly Serological test) Mycology, Mycobacteriology.

 
 
  Facilities:  

The following sections are operational in the department.

Media Preparation:
Media for cultivation of micro-organisms are prepared from ingredients on dehydrated media.
Sterilization:
Sterilization of prepared media through conventional methods. Washing, drying, packing and sterilization of materials to be used in Microbiology.
Clinical Microbiology Work:
Involves Bacteriology – Processing of specimens like urine, sputum, pus, stool, blood and other fluids. Surveillance of water samples and operation theatre.
Immunology:
Involves mainly serological tests like RA, CRP, ASO, VDRL, TPHA, WIDAL, ANA ELISA, Leptospira Antibody, Dengue IgM, HIV, Hepatitis B Virus, Anti HEV, Anti HAV IgM. Apart from these routine serological tests, special tests like ACCP (ELISA) and ANA Profile.
Mycobacteriology:
Examination of specimens for AFB screening and AFB culture
Virology:
Serological diagnosis of viral infections are carried out through tests based on ELISA.
Training Programme:
DIn addition to these, the department is offering two types of training programme for B.Sc. and M.Sc.(Microbiology) students from various colleges in Diagnostic Bacteriology, media preparation and serology to enlighten their knowledge in the field of microbiology.
6 months training programme for M.Sc.students and 2 weeks training programme for B.Sc. students.
Academic Work:
Academic work is mainly teaching of MBBS students in their second year. The teaching involves learning process through lectures, seminars and practicals. The curriculum involves Basic Microbiology, Sterilization and Disinfection, Clinical Microbiology including Immunology, Virology and Applied Microbiology. In addition there is a well equipped Laboratory for training of medical students.
